About the network

Distributed South is a Media Arts initiative working to develop audiences and dialogue within the sector. Through residencies and partnership working across the South of England, Distributed South aims to move and inform policy within Media Arts and to drive forward new models of practice and approach to the field.

If you are interested in participating in this initiative please register here and join the discussion, post events, images and video.

Distributed South is a new concept in dissemination, collaboration, and networking media art works in the South of England. Through a programme of residencies, research, exhibitions, distributed content, and innovative events Distributed South aims to increase the profile of media arts in the South of England to regional, national and international audiences, artists and peers.

As data management and digital distribution formats become more advanced, as more personal information is collected, connected and published, the notion of 'the distributed self' becomes increasingly significant. Distributed South is a residency and networking programme concerned with the concept, techniques and tools of 'distributedness' in media art practice.

The project aims to satisfy the following:

  • Production of new work through collaborative practice
  • Audience development and public participation
  • Building capacity for media arts in the South of England
  • Development of a peer to peer network for media arts in South of England
  • Raising profile of media arts in South
    • In recognition of this open, participatory and collaborative practice common to media arts the Distributed South residencies avoid the single focus on the artist and asks what roles can galleries, media centres, curators and artists all play in the development of distributed, collective creativity?
Digital distribution and participatory tools do not automatically equate to a readily participating audience. What conditions are necessary, technological, artistic, and social, to allow for true and effective public participation in distributed artworks?

The residency/commission programme offered by DS will encourage work distributed outside of the gallery space and will demonstrate how gallery projects can be enhanced and extrapolated using communications tools such as blogs, participatory websites, mobile phones, PDA's, Wikis, podcasts, Open Source Software, Global Positioning systems, and RFID tagging.

Distributed South is co managed by SCAN and SPACE Media.
